Ice Ice Baby

16 Jun

LanyssaWith the Hyperion finally painted, it seems like a good time to get to some of those smaller models in my collection that have been overlooked. One of these is the Nyss minion sorceress, Lanyssa Ryssyl.

Of course, the utility she brings to the table obviously had no bearing on this decision….

Despite being an elf, I wanted her to look a little different to my other Iosans. To begin with, I decided to make her even more ethereal, so I used a very muted palette of neutral colours, and as a winter themed model, I made her cloak of feathers, white.

With her paint scheme chosen, I wanted to try something different with her base also. To tie in with the rest of my army, I used the same water effects and paving, but in her case, it seemed very reasonable that the water beneath her feet should be frozen.

crackle

To get this effect, I created the base as per normal, and then in the ‘wet’ area, I used water effects with a tiny bit of turquoise ink mixed in. Once dry, I painted over the water effects with a lay of crackle paint.

This stuff is normally used for scrapbooks and it shrinks as it dries to create a crackled surface. I know there are a few different makes on the market, but I used Ranger Crackle Accents.

Once that was completely dry, a few glazes of thinned white paint was applied. This flowed into the cracks to highlight those, and made the surface slightly opaque just like real ice.

To finish off, a few patches of fine snow/pvc mix was added and voila, a frozen water feature!

Steamroller 2013

14 Feb

Earlier last year I posted some of thoughts regarding the 2013 version Warmachine/Hordes tournament format, Steamroller. Now the full version is published and I’ve now played it, I get to share my experiences of Steamroller in general, and Steamroller 2013 in particular.

steamroller

Steamroller is only the beginning…

One of the most interesting developments in Steamroller this year the fact Privateer Press have split the format four ways. The base point is the standard Steamroller pack. This is a more highly polished version of the pack from previous years, complete with variants so you can tweak the format. Continue reading

Poddy Casting

27 Dec

Earlier in the year I did a review of a few podcasts I was listening to. Well, it is about time that got updated because I have been listening to two other Warmachine/Hordes podcasts quite a lot since then.

elitecadre.wordpressElite Cadre

The Warmachine podcast that doesn’t take itself too seriously according to the tag line. Elite Cadre is recorded by some regular tournament goers in the Birmingham area of the United Kingdom, and is very English. As such, it is a great taste of home and English humour, which is something I occasionally miss over here.

Amongst all the community features and general madness, the guys also have a section entitled ‘Spelling it Out’ where they analyse one particular warnoun and share their wisdom…

After a year, the Elite Cadre are running a professionally produced and highly entertaining podcast. Highly recommended! However, moving on… Continue reading

Steamroller 2013

22 Dec

373087_988470164626244_1066081178_nOne of the changes moving between muppets and SPIF last year, was the the introduction (to me at least) of the Steamroller rules (linky here).

When I left the UK Warmachine was still very much a new thing at my local club and we were still getting our heads around the basic rules. The guys are SPIF on the other hand, are veterans; and I think the whole Steamroller format is much more prevalent in the Swedish meta.

Anyway, this means pretty much every Warmachine game I’ve played in the last twelve months has used a Steamroller scenario. And as a general rule, I suck at them. Continue reading

Summer Campaigning

25 Jul

I’m now back in Northern Europe, rather annoyingly just in time for the local club Warmachine/Hordes campaign that starts this week. I say “annoyingly” because despite taking painting and models on holiday, I simply didn’t have a chance to do anything hobby over the last two weeks.

The plan, I far as I can see, is to use the same Warlock or Warcaster for the entire campaign and build up the army size every couple of weeks, starting at 15 points and ending at 35 or 50 points (not sure which). The last trick is that you have to include all the models in your smaller lists in your bigger lists.

I’m pretty sure Gobbo, whom is running the campaign, has a cunning plan so I’m confident it will be great! Continue reading

Hunting Beasties

16 May

The elves have now had their first game and I have to say I learned quite a bit. To put this into context, I haven’t played Warmachine for nine months, I’ve never played my Retribution, and I’ve never played against Legion of Everblight.

Yep, I learnt a lot.

The game was a 25 point straight caster kill scenario, and my Kaelyssa list faced Epic Thagrosh (a fantastic big winged monster), Typhoon (a big three headed monster), four little monsters, and a spawning vessel; all under the command of the fearsome Alex (a very nice chap from these parts). Something to Listen Too?

16 Dec

Before we begin, a warning: this blog post will not be about making swoshing noises whilst playing wargames. Whilst some degree of friendly taunting is acceptable, and to be encouraged, bolter sound effects are not.

No, this blog post will be about podcasts, and there are lots of these around. However I will highlight just the three I listen to regularly. Two of these are related to wargaming, and the third is included because it is simply good for the soul.

Although I normally have a fairly hectic schedule, I do have at least 30 minutes in the car every day and in the absence of BBC Radio 4, these podcasts are a nice way to soften the trip to and from work. Continue reading
